Australian National Maritime Museum
On Sharks, the visually stunning and thought provoking light projection from China’s leading contemporary artists, confronts the practice of shark finning and the need to protect our marine life from consumerism and greed. See these majestic creatures as you’ve never seen them before in this funky, fiery yet poignant animated film on the museum’s huge rooftop. Follow the shark’s journey through the oceans to the plate in three chapters: hunting, desire and renaissance. Drawing on spectacular artwork from China, the animation takes you inside the mind of a shark and tugs heart strings in a story that is ultimately about conservation and sustainability. On Sharks, reflects how artists create work as a call to action seeking social change. It’s time we reconsider sharks as prey, not just as predators.
With the museum’s rooftop measuring an enormous 1,700sqm, the projection is visible across Darling Harbour, with the best vantage points being Pyrmont Bridge, King Street Wharf and Barangaroo.
